Chemical Peels
Chemical peels are an in office treatment that can improve the skin's appearance. A chemical solution is applied to face causing irritation that will result in the skin peeling off. The new skin that is shown will usually be smoother and less wrinkled than the older skin. Chemical peels can be used on the face, neck, décolletage, or hands.
How are chemical peels applied?
Chemical peels are applied in an outpatient setting. The skin is prepped and cleaned thoroughly. A preparation of chemical solutions will be applied to the skin. The chemicals can include glycolic acid, trichloroacetic acid, salicylic acid, or lactic acid. After the chemical peel is applied a hydrating ointment will be applied.
What to expect after the chemical peel is done?
Depending on the type of chemical peel applied, a reaction similar to that of sunburn. Peeling may involve redness followed by scaling or flaking of the skin. More invasive peels can result in swelling and blistering of the skin that may peel over 7-14 days. Gentle cleansing of the skin as well as moisturizer is applied to help the skin heal. The after result is healthier, younger, and brighter skin. Chemical peels may be repeated every 4-6 weeks.
